How to Use: 1. Hold the densiometer level, 12”–18” in front of your body at elbow height, ensuring your head is outside the grid area. 2. Assume four equi-spaced dots in each grid square and count dots equivalent to quarter-square canopy openings. 3. Multiply the total count by 1.04 to calculate the percentage of overhead area not occupied by the canopy. Subtract from 100 for overstory density percentage. 4. Take four readings per location (facing North, East, South, and West), then average for best results.
