The dichroscope indicates whether a stone is dichroic (reflects 2 colours). This can be helpful to distinguish stones of the same colour from each other. Dichroscopes can be identified with gems that are still in rough condition and when stones are set and difficult to get with other instruments. The light entering the dichroscope is divided into two polarised beams that have oscillation directions at right angles to each other. The two images in the dichroscope represent the polarized light, and the pleochroic colours mean birefringent stones, except when the stone is viewed through the optical axis. Monochrome in the dichroscope individually represents crushing stones. The advantage of the dichroscope is that the two pleochroic colors characteristic of a particular direction can be seen side by side in a birefringent jewel. If no dichroism is detected during the first evaluation, the stone can be turned and viewed in other directions.
